2017-18 Science Olympiad Team

Dear Families of 3rd-5th graders:

The 5th year of Science Olympiad at Morehead Montessori Elementary is upon us, and, as coach, I look forward to having a fun and unique experience with a new group that will comprise new participants as well as more than a few veterans.  The season will begin this month with a coach’s instructional workshop, and preparing for an information session at 5:30pm on November 7th, and getting applications ready to send home in early November.  Parent coaching of events will begin December 5th and every Tuesday afterward from 3:45-5:15pm through April.  Scholarships are available!

What is Science Olympiad?

Science Olympiad is a national organization with state chapters committed to teaching K-12 students Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) topics in an age appropriate, hands-on manner, and is composed of about 20 events that include many different aspects of science.   At the end of the teaching season (April 2017), there is a Durham County Schools competition where we can demonstrate, as a team, our knowledge of these events while competing against 25 other elementary schools.   This year’s events include the following, among many others:

  • The physics behind launching bottle rockets while learning fin design
  • Basic chemistry principles in solving a crime mystery
  • Discovering the names and functions of the digestive system

For more information where you can also find a complete list of event topics please visit the web site: https://www.sciencenc.com/pdfs/resources/elementary/2018DivAEventDescriptions.pdf

A few items to emphasize for the upcoming year:

  1. Sign out – All students will need to be returned to the Art room and be dismissed by the coaching staff to the designated parent/ or parent representative, and 1 coach will escort the After School Students to that program.

  1. Assignment of students to events will occur with deliberation, with the goal of having close to equal numbers of 3rd, 4th, and 5th graders in each event.  All students will receive 1 of their top event choices. Their other 2 events will be chosen based on their ranking of each event by liking, the need for our team structure, balance of ages, and permitting children to be taught by their event coaching parent if they each so choose.
  2. Assignment of students to participate in the end of year competition will take place at the beginning of the year.  Morehead will likely have 2 teams- a varsity and a JV.  5th graders will most likely be on Varsity, and 3rd graders will be JV.  Fourth graders will be split between each.

  1. We will cap the Morehead team at 40 participants. This will be firm, as it allows for better coaching, room utilization, and management of students.

And lastly-

  1. We will provide the snacks! No need for parent volunteers to bring snacks.

Next Steps:

  • Please let me know immediately if you are willing to coach one of the events. We can always use more help.  This is completely run by volunteers from Morehead!
  • Plan to attend the Information Session on November 7th
  • Even if you cannot coach, prepare to volunteer as a helper at least once from December – April.
  • Save the Date – our team will be competing in Durham on April 14th and all team members are encouraged to attend!

Thank you Morehead Elementary parents!!!  Please contact me at mathias.matthew@duke.edu if you have any questions.

Sincerely,

Matt Mathias

Science Olympiad is coming!!!! . . . Would you like to coach?

“Science is a cooperative enterprise, spanning the generations. It’s the passing of a torch from teacher, to student, to teacher. A community of minds reaching back to antiquity and forward to the stars.”

— Astrophysicist Neil deGrasse Tyson

We want you to be part of that community of science.  Do you have an interest in science and enjoy spending time with kids in 3rd-5th grade?  Become a volunteer Science Olympiad coach at Morehead!  Science Olympiad is committed to teaching Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics topics in a hands-on manner.  We will provide all the materials you need to be a great coach!  This year’s 20 events include:

  • Launching bottle rockets
  • Identifying unknown powders, distinguishing between different types of hairs, fibers and shoeprints
  • Discovering the human digestive system and nutrition

The team needs at least 1 coach per event (total 20 volunteers), and without coaches, we cannot have a team.

The coaching commitment is meeting at school one Tuesday every 3 weeks starting at 3:45pm and leading a 1-hour discussion with the same group of about 6 students from the end of November through April 2018.  In April, a team of students from Morehead will compete against other schools in Durham.  Join our team by contacting Matt Mathias (Matthew.Mathias@duke.edu), or Jenny Edmonds (MoreheadActvities@gmail.com). This program is supported by the Morehead PTA.

Suzuki Violin!!

Morehead’s Suzuki Violin Program is back! Classes will start before school the week of Jan. 30. The cost for the program is $100 per student for 30 minute group classes meeting weekly at 8:15 am through the school year. Kindergarteners and other beginners will meet on either Tuesdays or Thursdays. 1st graders and others with a year or so of experience will meet on Mondays and 2nd-5th graders with 2+ years of violin experience on Wednesdays. Parents should plan to stay through the class. Beginner students won’t need a violin just yet, so our instructor Ms. Taylor can answer all your questions at the first meeting, which is a parent meeting. If you’d like to get a head start, consider downloading and listening to Suzuki Violin School volume 1, available on iTunes. Please get your registration and payment in by Jan. 26th. Contact: kendallkmorgan@gmail.com (organizing parent) or Jennifer.w.taylor@gmail.com (instructor) with questions.
