Pre-K Sliding Scale Fee

The Durham Public School Board will begin charging a sliding scale fee for children attending pre-kindergarten classes at both Morehead Montessori Magnet School and George Watts Montessori Magnet School starting this coming school year (beginning August 2017). They hope to use the money earned through these fees to help cover the extra cost of Montessori materials and staff, as well as to increase pre-kindergarten positions elsewhere. The documents listed below will provide more details.

AUCTION! AUCTION!

This Friday night is the auction! Maybe you’ve heard? Please come out to Duke Gardens on Friday night to party with us. Free food, free drinks, a teacher’s raffle, a dance party! Oh, and the fabulous auction as well: we have all kinds of great items up for bid: gift cards to local restaurants, vacation getaways, sporting events, jewelry and more! There will be a silent auction and a live auction. It promises to be a good time for all, so please come out!

Weekly Announcements for January 11-15

Have you all settled back into the routine of school after the winter break? There are lots of exciting things ahead for our students. Please read through the following list of announcement and make note of important dates. And remember, we need each of YOU to help in order to build a strong and robust community!
  • As you might know, our 5th grader’s have a tradition of taking a spring field trip to Washington DC. The trip includes staying over in a 4-H facility in DC, and it’s a great opportunity for our students. This year, we have been lucky enough to secure some matching funds from Disney to help us offset the cost to 5th grade families. The funding is through Donor’s Choose and is available as matching funds- meaning that in order to receive the full amount of funds available to us, we must first pledge a certain amount of funds from our own pockets. This document details instructions on how to donate to this worthwhile cause. Your donation must happen THIS WEEK in order to get matching funds through Donor’s Choose.
  • Girls on the Run signup ends THIS WEDNESDAY and we are still seeking participants. We DO now have enough girls signed up to have a team, but there are more spots available. The program is open to 3rd, 4th, and 5th grade girls. Please read more about this fantastic program here and sign up TODAY if you have a girl that is eligible: http://www.gotrtriangle.org/what-we-do/3rd-5th-grade-program.
  • Morehead’s Talent Show is here! Does your child like to sing, play an instrument, recite poetry, do martial arts, dance, or some other talent not mentioned here? If so, this is the perfect opportunity to perform in front of peers in an encouraging environment. Please sign-up your child’s act no later than January 20th in order to get show approval at this link www.SignUpGenius.com/go/10C0B44A5A828A02-morehead. This is simply to check for appropriate lyrics and content. If your child is using pre-recorded accompaniment, please get it to Betsy Hughes, Elizabeth.Hughes@dpsnc.net, by Friday, January 22nd, and make sure it is no longer than 2 minutes. There will be no dress rehearsal. The show will be at 6:00PM on Thursday, January 28th. If you have any questions or comments, please contact Tonya Kirk at tonya@carotids.com.
  • Out next full-body PTA meeting is NEXT THURSDAY, January 21st. Stay tuned for a special announcement with more details about this meeting later in the week.
  • Line up your babysitters and save the date!! Morehead’s annual Dance Party and Fundraiser Auction is scheduled for Friday, February 26th. Details will be forthcoming.
  • Durham Public School’s Evening of Entertainment is right around the corner. We have several Morehead students participating in this year’s program.  Funds raised from this performance go toward scholarships for DPS seniors. You can get tickets here: http://www.dpacnc.com/events/detail/an-evening-of-entertainment-2
  • Students, please remember to enter your reading time on www.reading-rewards.com or turn in your paper reading logs in the blue Library Book Return at the front door. Students who have read and logged over 1,000 minutes by January 17th will receive a small prize from Mrs. K for being a Meerkat Reading Leader! Our school goal is to reach 1 million minutes read by June 1.  When we reach 500,000 minutes, our school will adopt a sea turtle from the World Wildlife Fund. Please call or e-mail Mrs. K if you have questions about this program and thank you for encouraging your child/children to READ, READ, READ!

Our Students Will Sing at the Bulls Game!!

Our UE students will sing the national anthem at the Bulls! All UE students should have brought home the attached letter (in English and Spanish) today regarding the Durham Bulls game on Wednesday, April 27, 2016. This is a long way off, but we need to know a headcount by Friday, Dec 11 for our section. After that date, the remaining seats in the section will be released to the general public. The Dec 11 deadline is firm. Ms. Hughes will reserve a seat for anyone provided that she receives a check for $13 per person by Friday, Dec 11. Checks should be made payable to Morehead Montessori. This is always such a fun night for our school. Would love to see many Morehead families at the game!
